Frederick Lam is Croucher Trust Fellow at the Royal College of Music (RCM). His research, which is supported by the Croucher Hong Kong Charitable Trust, focuses on interventions and practices that promote coping skills, resilience, and institutional support related to performing artists’ health and wellbeing.
Frederick began his formal studies in classical music at Hong Kong Baptist University and later earned a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree from Goldsmiths, University of London. He was awarded an MSc in Performance Science from the RCM in 2018, and he completed his PhD, also at the RCM, in 2024, examining the development of coping strategies and psychological resilience among conservatoire musicians, with a particular emphasis on career development support.
He was also a member of MedTech SuperConnector, an accelerator programme funded by Research England. During his work on the programme, Frederick founded OccuPain™, a web-based application designed to address the occupational demands and information needs of emerging patients and to enhance digital pain indication technology for screening pain-related issues.
As a solo violinist and chamber musician, Frederick regularly performs in both the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. He is an Associate Fellow of the UK’s higher education academy, AdvanceHE (AFHEA), and an Honorary Research Associate at Imperial College London.
